The cinema known as documentary, with all the vastness that the concept has today, from educational films to the reconstruction of a fact or a historical event, is perhaps the main basis of revolutionary film.
Fernando Solanos and Octavio Gettino.
I have just begun filming my new feature-length documentary investigating the role of the British government in the murder of over 120 civilians in Counties Armagh and Tyrone from July 1972 to 1978. The film is broadly based on the work of the Pat Finucane Centre and the recent best-selling book, ‘Lethal Allies’ by journalist and author, Anne Cadwallader. A group of killers comprising members of the RUC and UDR along with loyalist paramilitaries were responsible for a murder campaign that travelled into the Republic of Ireland culminating in the Dublin/Monaghan bombings amongst other terrorist attacks.
“Film should not just appeal to emotion and feeling, but also to reason and intellect”
“I only wish for my films to interpret events and reveal themselves in a way that history would vindicate my decisions.”
Thank you, Seán.
